Abstract
As the standard of living improves and medical technology developes, life expectency has increased and the population of the elderly has increased. So the problems concerning the elderly have became social issues and many researches have been done on the living of the elderly. One of the important problems is loneliness the elderly perceive, and its relationship with the support from the family was explored in this research.
The relationship between loneliness and physical health status was also investigated. The results will provide valuable data for nursing intervention to help them lead a better life.
This study was based on the survey data from the 97 elderly who were in Seoul and Kyunggido, Korea. A 14 item questionnaire was used to get their general characteristics. In order to measure the degree of family support, Kang¢¥s Family Support measurement tool(11 questionnaire) was used. For the loneliness, UCLA Loneliness Scale Tool(20 questionnaire translated into Korean to suit the Korean environment) was used. Lee¢¥ Physical Health Assessment Tool(20 questionnaire) was used to measure the physical health status. T -test and ANOVA were used on the data, and Pearson correlation was used to test research hypotheses.
The summary of the survey data is as follows
1. The important factors of the family support are whether they are hospitalized and who supports the money.
2. The important factors of loneliness are age, marriage status and spouse. 3. The important factors of the health status are age, the marriage status, spouse, monthly money and who supports the money.
The results of testing the hypotheses were as follows :
1. The hypothesis that "The higher the rate of the family support that the elderly perceived, the lower the loneliness" was supported(r=- .4553, p= .000).
2. The hypothesis that "The higher the rate of the family support that the elderly perceived, the better the health" was supported(r= .1851, p= .035).
3. The hypothesis that "The lower the loneliness, the better the health" was supported
(r=- .3199, p= .001).
